Arturo's Mexico To Go

All I have to say is best burrito EVER!!  I can't wait to try more things here.

I had the chicken burrito and, as discussed above, it was out of this world amazing!  The perfect amount for lunch and reasonably priced at $8.50.  I was also impressed with the organization.  I've found ordering at most of the food trucks confusing, slow and disorganized.  Not at Arturo's.  You stand in line to order.  You continue in the line down the truck indicating what you want in your food, and by the time you pay at the end of the line, your meal is ready.  Impressive.

My only warning is that I think they pour the hot sauce on top and it drains to the bottom.  I ordered mine medium (which I thoroughly enjoyed), but as I was eating it I kept thinking "this seems more like mild than medium."  Then I got to the bottom and it definitely felt more like hot than medium.  So just be careful and protect that tongue of yours!

Holy Perogy

My sister and her boyfriend were in town for the weekend, so we decided to check out the Food Cart Fest at the Waldorf Hotel.  Talk about a great event!  Plus, a great way to check out a bunch of food carts all at once.  The only unfortunate part about it, was that the line-ups were out of control.  I'm pretty sure that it took over 30 minutes for me to get my food.

But enough about timing, on to the food!  I'd heard rumour of Holy Perogy and was very excited to see them there.  I'd had a late and sizeable morning snack, so I decided that two snacks would make a lunch.

I ordered their classic cheese perogies, which came with fried onions and sour cream, and I added sausage.  I don't know if it was the fact that it took so long to get them, or the fact that they didn't match up to Cecil's perogies, but I was a little disappointed.  Don't get me wrong, they were tasty perogies and a solid sized snack, but for $8 plus $2 for the little amount of sausage I got, I was expecting a bit more.

Conclusion?  If you're in the mood for perogies, I don't think you'd be disappointed by Holy Perogy, but I also don't think you'd be blown out of the water.

Mangal Kiss

Today was my lucky day.  I'd arranged to go for lunch with a friend (who just happens to write a fabulous blog of her own...link below).  We were planning on hitting a food cart and she suggested Mangal Kiss since it was a bit more on the healthy side and she really liked it. 

I was so excited!  I had walked by this cart many a time and gone weak at the knee over the fabulous smells that came from it.  However, any time I looked at the menu it completely baffled me and I had no idea how to order, so I never ended up going there.  Now I had a Mangal Kiss veteran who could teach me how!!  It turns out it was pretty easy.  She said to just pick your meat (chicken, lamb or vegetarian) and say "I'd like the chicken wrap, please."  And it came out all put together in its lovely deliciousness!

This has to be the best wrap I have ever had.  First of all, the kabob is grilled right in front of you, so it's fresh and hot.  The wrap is stuffed with yummy veggies such as shredded carrots, beets, lettuce, daikon, carrots, etc.  And on top of that there was cous cous and some amazing sauces in it.  My taste buds were in taste bud heaven! 

Then there was four added bonuses: (1) it only took five minutes to get our food (granted we were there before noon), (2) the wrap is between $7.50 and $8.50 depending on your meat, (3) it's healthy (or at least food cart healthy), and (4) it filled me up to the brim!

When people ask me which food cart is my favourite, I never like to pick just one because I think it depends on what type of food you feel like and how hungry you are.  However, if I had to pick just one...it would hands down be Mangal Kiss.  Amazing!

Feastro

Today was a treat.  Not only did I get to meet up with some very good friends for lunch, but I finally got to try Feastro!  The food was definitely yummy in my tummy good.

I had been tempted by the plethera of tacos, but wasn't convinced that they would fill me up, so I opted for their Bonsai Prawn platter.  It was heavenly!  It tasted like they'd cooked tomatoes in olive oil and garlic and then mixed in rice and prawns.  My favourite part was the skewer of grilled pineapple on top of the rice and prawns.  Definitely filling and scrumptious.

My friends opted to try a variety of the tacos.  They loved all of them, they looked very yummy to me, they were bigger than I thought, and I officially conclude that two tacos would have filled me up for lunch.

The bonus to this food cart?  They take VISA.  The downside?  It's a bit pricey, they don't include HST in their prices and it was a bit of a wait to get your food.  My meal cost $13 plus HST, and two tacos would have been $16 plus HST.  So, if you ordered two tacos and a bottle of water for lunch, your meal was over $20.

The cart is in a great location near the Olympic cauldron.  There were lots of shaded and unshaded seat options for your bum's pleasure.

Bella Gelateria

I met up with a couple of friends for lunch today and, after we were done eating, we came to the conclusion that a treat was necessary.  I'd heard amazing things about Bella Gelateria for quite some time, so we decided to try it out.  It completely blew my socks off!  I had the stracciatella, which was one of my favourites when I was travelling in Italy, and it literally transported me back to the cobblestone streets and hot italian men.  If you're a gelato lover and you haven't tried Bella Gelateria, it's a must.  I will warn you that it is a bit pricey, however the portions are solid and the gelato itself is the best I've ever had outside of Italy.  So, definitely a worthwhile treat every once in a while!

Off the Wagon

I'd been dying to try the tacos at Off the Wagon for quite some time, but I was never fully convinced that three tacos would fill me up for lunch.  So, I was thrilled when I discovered they were at the Khatsahlano street festival.  I tried three different types (pork, chicken and beef brisket).  Very yummy tacos.  However, my gut was right.  They're more of a snack than a meal and are not the cheapeast option around with the three costing $10.  That being said the flavours were unreal and they were fun to try.  Cash only.

Fable

Tonight was a night that I was salivating over for weeks!  I'd been dying to try Fable and it definitely didn't disappoint.  Fable is officially included in my absolute favourite restaurants in Vancouver.  The food was delicious, the atmosphere was awesome (a cross between Gastown and Kits), and the prices were reasonable.  A restaurant that made you feel like it was a treat to go to, but you also felt comfortable and at home in and it didn't come close to breaking the bank.

I went with three good friends who are also food lovers, so we decided to share everything we ordered so we could try as much as possible.  For starters we had the Chickpea Fritters (unique and mouth-watering all at once) and the Spaghetti and Meatballs (good, but it didn't live up to the hype for me). 

For mains, I ordered the Slow Cooked Local Salmon with gnocchi, kale, leeks and spinach puree.  My friends ordered the Potato Crusted Chicken with Ratatouille; the Gnocchi with pesto, pea shoots and macerated cherry tomatoes; and the Duck Breast with scallion perogie, fiddle heads and cauliflower.  My personal favourite was the salmon.  It was cooked to perfection and the flavours were heavenly.  The remaining dishes were also very yummy (especially the gnocchi), so it was probably more that I was in a fish mood that night.  What surprised me was that I liked the Duck.  I'm not normally a duck fan, but I quite enjoyed it.  I can't wait to go back and try the Flat Iron Steak!

For dessert we ordered the Lemon Pot de Creme, Chocolate Pudding, and Daily Sweet Bites that had home-made marshmallows, mini pavlovas, and camerons.  All were heavenly!  I thoroughly enjoyed the Daily Sweet Bites and Lemon Pot de Creme.  The Chocolate Pudding was good, but I'm not generally a big chocolate pudding fan.

I wish I had pictures to convey the yumminess, but I was just too busy eating!  I highly recommend this restaurant...and getting a reservation, because it gets busy.
